The connection between a parent and a child is the child’s first impression of the world. It sets the tone for all further communication with others. Strong family ties contribute to the development of child’s independence, curiosity, self-esteem and ability to make decisions. That’s why the parent assumes great responsibility when guiding the child.
You have to first ask yourself whether you want to be a friend or a mentor to the child. How do you make your child look up to you and respect you as a parent?
Parenting Goals
Here are the goals that you have to set when you have welcomed this child into the world.
Unconditional love. Love is what should drive you as a parent to make the right decisions about parenting. Loving your child means making his needs the priority and assessing every difficult situation from his point of view. Caring for a child is always paying attention to what your relationship is.
Contributing all of your energy. Even if you have had some issues with your parents when you were growing up, this experience shouldn’t reflect on your child. Even if you are exhausted after a long day at work, your child expects you to spend time with him. Your child will energize you with his positive and give you the strength to be there for him.
Being fully present. You may have mastered the art of multitasking for daily things like work or household. The child, however, is like a flower that won’t flourish unless you are there in the moment with him. Seeing how engaged you are in his life the child will know that you care.
Parenting Tasks
This is how you actually develop and apply your parenting skills on daily basis.
1. Self-expression
Children, like all people, aren’t mind-readers. They, sometimes tend to take responsibility for the parent’s bad mood. So, it’s essential to let your child know how you feel about them. It requires always reminding children how much you love them. However, don’t be afraid to take a firm hand. If you disagree on something, take some time to explain to your kid if he did something wrong and how you will help him make it better.
2. Encouraging Inquisitiveness
Some parents who have failed at upbringing their children now would be happy if a child came to them with a question about life. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to create a strong bond. Yes, children have a way of shocking their parents with their curiosity. But you should feel proud to be the guide to your child way of life while patiently explaining him the right and wrong and helping him form his views and opinions.
Encourage the child’s interest to learn something new. Even if it’s one leisure club after another, nurture his confidence in his abilities and help develop his personal strengths.
3. Working As A Team
Your child is always happy to help. It makes him feel as your respectful companion. It also helps you as a parent in teaching responsibility and commitment.
Be ready to change your mind under your child’s opinion. That way they will feel helpful and engaged in your adult life.
4. Developing A Relationship With Trust
If you make promises to a child, keep them. Don’t break a child’s confidence in you, but not picking them up or forgetting about their needs. Trust your child as well, for him to have a chance to open up to you freely.
5. Through Play
Playtime is the best form of bonding. You will get to know how your child sees the world and it will be a chance for him to know you better. You can teach different socials roles while playing. Communication and sharing is what you get as a result of leisure time spent together.
6. Prioritizing Time and Being Available
Theirs is no such thing as quality time anymore. You can’t just devote time to kids at the weekend and think that this will bond you. Quality time with kids is all the time. Every minute you have before or after work should be spent on building the relationship with your children. This also means being a good listener, if it just the news of the day that your kid wants to tell you. Every time you are together is the chance for communication and sharing.
Of course, parenting ways may vary for different types of kid’s personality. The important thing is to always rely on these three pillars of successful parenting: be firm, be fair and be friendly.
